Comfort and Wellness: How to Feel at Home When You’re Away

There are certain creature comforts that we all crave. Peace. Connection. Sensory comfort. Good food. Even music. More often than not, these are things that are familiar and accessible (and usually pretty common) when we’re home. To us, home can take many forms, but ultimately, it’s that familiar space that helps to support our well-being physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We have our familiar rituals and routines. Our favorite food and music and special places to spend time with people that we love and care about.

So when our loved ones (or ourselves!) have to spend time away from that “happy place”, whether it be for work or because they’re spending time in a hospital or another care facility, it always helps to find a way to help them feel at home. So we’ve put together a few ways that you can help do just that.

Routines and rituals to experience the benefits of self-care

The benefits of self-care through routine and rituals can include helping to both lower anxiety and increase happiness. Helping to set up familiar routines and rituals can be a wonderful and effective way to feel more comfortable and at peace. Ensuring your loved one has their favorite self-care products to begin and end the day with is a simple and familiar way to connect to home. Favorite essential oils, a book, music, meditations, or other bedtime or morning rituals can also be recreated wherever they are to help improve their sense of wellness.

A little decor goes a long way

Decorating a space, like a room in a hospital or care facility, with familiar and joyful items such as photos, favorite blanket or things that hold sentimental value can be a source of comfort and connection, a reminder of those familiar feel-good items that hold a place in their hearts.

Lighting can also help to create a peaceful mood in unfamiliar surroundings if the option to bring in warm lamps or fairy lights is available to you. There’s something simple, comforting and joyful about a string of lights strung around a window, don’t you think?

Care package for comfort and wellbeing

Warmth, comfort, and tranquility in an unfamiliar space is a gift to those who are away from the place they call home. Giving your loved one a care package can help lift their spirits and remind them that they aren’t alone.

MiniGem Comfort offers a wonderful care package that engages all five senses to help create a greater sense of calm and help ground them in the present moment. Soft bedding,

a sound machine, essential oils, and lollies can help ignite their senses to support a greater sense of relaxation and wellness.

Time and connection

More than anything, it’s time spent with our loved ones, connecting and holding space for them, that is the biggest gift. So put time aside for regular visits (or video calls if the distance is too far) that they can look forward to. After all, home is where the heart is!

Do you have any other tips to feel at home when you or a loved one is away? We’d love to hear them!
